More Alpine Meadows Ski Deals
Often called one of the “best medium-sized” resorts in the country, Alpine Meadows is anything but small. It has 2,400 patrolled acres, 100 named runs, two terrain parks, and 495 inches of average annual snowfall. Located at Lake Tahoe, six miles northwest of Tahoe City, and 200 miles east of San Francisco, Alpine Meadows is a laid back and welcoming resort with some great skiing.
Since the resort is surrounded by National Forest, there are no big hotels and a ... super cool open boundary policy. Mountain officials also encourage skinning up and enjoying the backcountry, as long as you are knowledgeable, take a buddy, and carry a beacon, probe, and shovel. One of the must-hit runs is Estelle Bowl, technically located in-bounds but requiring a little hike, forcing skiers to earn their turns. Also mandatory are Sherwood Forest and Sherwood run, side-by-side sun warmed bowls on Alpine’s backside. While the surrounding National Forest is good for backcountry lovers and those looking for views unobstructed by huge hotels and development, it also means there is a lack of amenities at the base of Alpine Meadows. Most head to Tahoe City, Squaw Valley, or Truckee for a busier après scene, restaurants, or lodging. But you can always take the after-hours snowcat for a gourmet dinner at Mid-Mountain Chalet.
But with terrain that offers plenty to choose from and tons of on-mountain programs, you won’t feel like anything is missing.
