Valle Nevado Reviews & Tips (4)

It takes a bit to get the lay of the land, you can see LaParva and Colorado from Valle Nevado and can ski to them inadvertently. Valle Nevado uses separate lift passes for each day, even when you buy a multiday lift ticket. You can easily get to the other areas from Valle Nevado if you take the correct route in. You then can ski to the bottom to purchase a lift ticket for that area. Ask a ski patroller for directions to the best place of entry. The temps were unusually warm for the week of 8/26/16. The good grooming is very firm in the morn until the sun softens it. The crud is quite suitable, not nearly as wet/sloppy as one would think with the warm temps. It may be a result of the very low humidity or low week day skier traffic. At times we would literally not see anyone else on the slopes or the lifts. The poma (disc surface tow) is unlike others, the operator individually engages each poma and be prepared, you can get quite the launch! Not sure, but they may get their jollies out of that. Most employees at Valle Nevado either speak some English or will get someone who can, not so much at the other areas, brush up on your Spanish. Attention to the sparse signage is a must, much different than North America...... but then again we are not in Kansas anymore, are we Toto? ;-) Most people are very friendly and helpful, ski and enjoy!

Skiing in late August 8/24/16 is like East Coast Spring skiing in the US, hard pack firm in the morning and mashed potatoes by 2pm. But there is lots of snow on the runs and as it gets really soft you can also go off piste a bit. We skiied La Parva yesterday and same conditions, though takes a little longer to soften up as slopes are not in the sun as early as Valle Nevado. Lockers are relativley expensive 10.000cpl but you can come and go as you please. Food on the mountain is expensive (so whats new?) people are friendly, did not see any Vermonters working the lifts !

Awesome trip in late Jun / early Jul last year. We lucked out in that it dumped about 7 or 8 inches the days before we went up from Santiago. Off piste was a ghost town, and that is where we stayed the whole time. View from the top at 12K is unbelievable! There are NO trees, so if that is your thing, you won't like it hear. No bumps either, and nothing super steep except at the very top. Word of caution: be careful not to wander to far off piste to skiier's right or you end up at el Colorado, another resort. I did this, and took the J bar up not realizing I wasn't at Valle any more. Skiied a steepand then when I tried to go back up, the lift operator informed me I wasat the wrong place. He wouldn't let me back up another lift that would have allowed me to ski back to VN, and told me which way to go to hike it. Needless to say, the route was unskiable in places. When I took my skiis off, I sunk up to my waist in snow. Not cool. I ended up having to belly crawl to keep from sinking, and push my skiis in front of me. My buddy was sick up in the room (south america anyone???), so they would not have found my body until recently, lol. Otherwise, great experience. Very nice hotel up to U.S. standards. Most women with boyfriends, so don't plan on meeting single girls.

Lovely mountains, pistes not well marked and could use more signage. The road from Santiago is very windy and takes time to get to the mountain. The other notable difference is that there are no trees, but beautiful none the less. I'd ski there again in the lovely warm sunshine!
