Tucked away about 35 miles southwest of South Lake Tahoe, Kirkwood Mountain Resort turns into a picturesque high alpine adventure playground! World class rock climbing, hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding and fishing are all just within a stone's throw of the resort. Fields of wildflowers will take your breath away during the summer months, and the turning aspens make a... beautiful backdrop during the fall. In the winter months Kirkwood offers big Mountain skiing/riding with a small town attitude. Our unique location atop the Sierra Crest combined with elevations ranging 7,800 to 9,800 feet create a little something we like to call the K-Factor – a geographical predisposition to receive the lightest, the driest, and the most plentiful snow in the Tahoe region. With 2000 feet of vertical drop, and over 2300 acres of terrain from calm groomed beginner runs to hair raising cornices, cliffs and the most high angle grooming around, there’s something for everyone at the 'Wood. Set in one of the most beautiful mountain valleys imaginable, Kirkwood provides the classic ski vacation with true alpine village atmosphere. Read more

Great variety, including some nice tree runs (Jupiter?). Some slow lifts here and there, but with so many runs it was tolerable. Nice vibe to the village. The drive is totally worth it from Tahoe - I'll be going back. Had better snow than Sierra or Alpine Meadows the same weekend.

If you don't know your way around Kirkwood, remember to bring a stand alone GPS! You won't get any data connections! We almost got lost because we were using cell phone GPS.

Don't let the no snow in Tahoe fool you. I had a lot of fun at Kirkwood. Not as good as Heavenly, but it's cheaper and the runs were more than decent. Just be a little careful, some of the shadowy parts are a little icy.

Just went to Kirkwood on Jan 5th 2012-
The slopes were a bit icy and only about 6 were open, but they were well groomed. As it was a weekday there was barely anyone there which made it nice and easy to get in a bunch of runs. I would go again if I could get such a good deal on a lift ticket.
Pack a lunch or you will spend $10+ on food

US Airbag is at Kirkwood this week and it was a blast! They built a great jump that you land into a giant airbag. I would definitely recommend at least trying it out
As with most of the resorts in the area the snow is man made. Got a killer deal on Liftopia, between the price and the US Airbag demo we still had a great time!

Kids ski free on Sunday with a purchase of a adult ticket. Lots of powder even this late in the season... Though some lifts were closed.

Kirkwood is my favorite Tahoe resort. You can ski anywhere there is snow. We got lucky and our last day of three there, was a powder day. We bought chains and installed them on our rental SUV to get there, and were glad we did. I will always go to Kirkwood whenever I am in Tahoe, even though it's an hour ride from where we usually stay. It's totally worth it.

Great chutes and pitches, although the drive can be a doozy. I would definitely go back on a powder day. Watch out for high winds and chair closures though!

Kirkwood is amazing- the groomers were lovely, the steeps are scary (in a good way), the snow was fantastic and it wasnt crowded at all. We skied a week in the Tahoe area, and it was our favorite mountain by far. The tickets were a breeze to pick up, parking was simple, and the roads were bad (even after a week of big storms). Definitely a great mountain for advanced skiers who love steep bowls, cornices, and trees. When we were there, there were plenty of groomers, but also tons of untouched terrain and bumps.

Hi there folks,
We are sorry for the recent closure of hwy 88. However it was not closed for 3 days aand was only closed for a couple of hours. we have been working closely with CalTrans and they have done a fantastic job of keeping the roads open. we have received 16' in 10 days and as such the roads have been very dangerous. As you can expect now that the storms have died down a bit and reduced to only a few inches a night instead of 3-4' per night. Conditions are Amazing! 240" base and 700"+ this season. Couldn't be a better time to get up here!
Hope to see all of you soon and thanks for keeping Kirkwood an amazing place to ski/ride.

The only road there (CA-88) was closed 4 days in a row (3/19-3/22) due to avalanche control. Bummer! I was suppose to ski there on Sun (3/20). So, on a good snow day, don't plan to go there because most likely, they'll close that section of CA-88 to Kirkwood.

Best groomed slopes I've ever skiied on in my life. We thought it was FAR superior to Heavenly. We especially enjoyed the Blue runs. We were impressed with the large num ber of skiiers who did the double black runs. Basically this is a mountain for all levels of skiing.

Kirkwood was great! No hassle getting our tickets, they even gave us the tickets for the next day on the 1st day no problem. Liftopia is great!!

Had a great time, but Liftopia screwed up our passes and we ended up waiting 45 minutes in the ticket office to clear up the situation. Still waiting for Liftopia customer service to get back to me (going on 3 days now) to resolve this. Buyer beware!
As for Kirkwood -- love it! Get to backside (Sunrise lift) in the morning for best conditions.

What a great variety of runs. Try skiing on Sunday, especially if the weather is a bit snowy, the mountain was almost empty. Lift lines non-existent and skiing terrific. Only problem was, bring a snack with you to enjoy around the fireplace bar since they stop serving food at 3.
