Winterplace Reviews & Tips (11)

I will start with the positive, Very easy access from I-77, great mountain layout with options for different skill levels. The not so positive, long life lines. 30 and 40 minute wait time for all the lifts! Would not honor the on line 10% off rentals discount. Employees sent you running in circles, no one know anything about this discount. The slopes were in good condition, well groomed but the runs are short. Staff, well apparently they did not have many employees working that day. It was every man, woman and child for them selves. People were pushing and butting in lift lines. Only one person attending the lift and did not care about the dismay going on in lift lines. trash every where in the dinning area, I do not think the tables were ever cleaned. Winterplace has really let them selves go down hill. They use to be such a good place to take the family. The next time we go skiing we will head to northern WV. Not going back to Winterplace.

Do not plan on going there and feel like you will be treated like a human being. I really think the people here are on something, no one was helpful no one cared, it just seemed like they only cared that I paid for my stuff and the rest I was left to fend for myself. I will not being going back to this place again. If you are Skiing for the first time don't come here.

It was my first time skiing and I was scared and dreaded how I would learn it. The coaches were wonderful. They went out of their way to make me comfortable and did not hesitate to go out of their way and gave me 3 lessons according to my skill level to make sure I was comfortable. By the end of 2nd day I was coming down their steepest slope on my own. The staff is super nice, friendly, helpful and vigilant. Great place for beginners. I went Christmas break, the snow level was the best compared to the surrounding areas and most of their slopes were open ( 75% compared with Snowshoe which had only 26% open).Good price on rentals and lift tickets, lessons etc, not very crowded. Efficient staff kept long lines from forming. Overall a very good value for the money. Would not hesitate to go back again specially if it is within 3-4 hours driving distance.

Very disappointed in Winterplace understandable Mother Nature controls the snow fall and temps HOWEVER the entire resort is in need of a complete overhaul. Rental equipment is poor at best and having to dig through bins for ski poles is absurb as most are severely bent and should be removed from service. Food service shut down at 3p.m. Staff was definitely not up to their "A" game whether end of season or whatever totally unacceptable that staff basically looked unprofessional and like slobs despite the Winterplace vests which were grungey looking. Tables on the patio area had torn vinyl tablecloths stapled to them. Lift attendents had a "could care less" attitude. Had conditions been better and slopes were in good shape skiing trip would have been pleasant as trails are good for beginners and families. Obviously a onetime good resort but is floundering and in need of new management.

Arrive early and bundle up. Powder was awesome, mostly due to dumping of snow earlier in the week. Single rider lines are usually the far right, but on lift #5, this line gets thinner as you get close to the front. I kept catching my board on the marker as I was about to step out into line to catch the lift. When renting skis, realize you need to get your boots FIRST. Friends wasted 30 minutes getting up to get skis, only to find out they needed boots first. A "1st - Get boots" and "2nd - Skis/Board" line could have got us all out on the slopes about an hour earlier. The only water fountain I found was at Mountain House, where we ate lunch. If there were more in the main building, I didn't see them. Despite a few inconveniences, I had a blast. I've only been riding a couple seasons, and this was only my 4th time out. My group is considering one more trip before the season ends, as the slopes were well groomed, perfect for my riding level, and this is a rather sizable mountain for all. I don't think we even got clustered into a crowd of people on the same slope, except maybe 1 or 2 times.

The earlier you get there the better off you are. We had perfect weather and couldn't have asked for better lines at the lifts. Winterplace is always a great place to go if you are tired of the same old stuff in NC. However, I will say snowshoe is definitely a better resort. . . Winterplace is a great day trip spot and it's always a good relaxing time.

You could call this my 'local' resort since I live an hour from it. It is definately worth checking out if you have never been here. Yes, the lifts are slow and worse on crowded days. The diamonds are all short but are actually steeper and take more skill then some I've rode at Snowshoe. The key is to use the diferent trail intersections in the blues and greens to make the most fun downhill run you can. Runs to try include 'country roads', 'snowbowl', 'milkshake', buttermilk', "rendevous to the terrain park', and 'drop off', 'look at me' and 'plunge' and 'nose dive'. Anyone can have fun here, and it is truely great for beginners. At the same time, someone with more experience can try a few of the small intersection runs and study the trail map and come up with some great winding, fast runs and end up in different areas of the mountain. The single bigest problem is crowding on busy days and weekends....but you also get to ride from 9am to 10pm everyday....and its really only crowded around 12-2 anyway.

Great place to enjoy the outdoors. If the conditions are good then the skiing is easy. Much better drive from Charlotte than the NC mts. Easy 3 hr trip, many hotel options, offers plenty for all ages. Hrs are great for full day of skiing.

Lets see here where to start? Oh yes, horribly SLOW lifts! Wow this place pitches a great tag line but once you get on the ice, sorry snow, you will understand that you just bought an all day lift ticket to ride the chair. The 3-4 black Diamonds they have take 10 seconds to descend, the entire resort takes under a minute to ski across. If you are thinking about skiing WV do yourself a favor and go north to SnowShoe, TimberLine, Canaan, even WISP!

Winterplace is a great value for the money with the all day lift ticket. Beware if weather permits, they will blow snow and you can get blasted (frost bite) so layer up and be prepared. Great beginner ski resort with many lesson, rental, and lift packages. Good food, prices are little higher than McDonalds, but what you would expect at a ski resort. I would recommend bringing a bag with extra layers and gloves. Lockers are down stairs and only cost $1 to lock and $1 to lock again after re-opening. Great overall place to take the kids.
