In Brief: Fun place for an expert skier to go with family and/or friends who are learning to ski. The Details: My family and I travelled to Black Mountain this past weekend. I hadn't been there in 20 years; since Black is a "family mountain", and I generally prefer more of a challenge. Well, now I have a family; so I thought it would be a great place to bring my 6 year old daughter. It was a good move: she loved the place. My wife, who is an intermediate skier, also loved Black Mountain. She liked that she could ski all over the mountain. The expert trails challenged her, yet were short enough so that it didn't take her all day to get down one of them. Black has old-school feel to it. The trails are short but fun, with a classic New England style. The atmosphere is distinctively laid back, which made for stark (and welcome) contrast to the southern VT resort we usually visit. We will be "back to Black" next year. (One last note: We stayed at the excellent Christmas Farm Inn, which is just a few minutes down the road from Black Mountain.)

Black Mountain is small, and the people were very friendly..there was a lift operater who was th emost entertaining lift operator I have encountered in 20 years, The grooming isn't the best, and it was pretty bumpy after a snowfall...

I make it a point to ski Black with my young kids because I want them to learn to ski the right way, so they can enjoy the sport their whole lives with confidence in their ability. No false expectations regarding what the sport is really all about. This is truely 'classic' New England skiing. The folks who run it are down to earth and super nice. You can't beat the price either. Seeing the horses by the base lodge adds so nicely to the experience. It would be shame to come to the valley and not have a Black mountain experience. My advice to George above- stick to Killington.

Black is a classic ski area that actually has TRAILS, not giant boulevards of man made snow! It has character, low to no crowding, and an excellent atmosphere. You can scarecely find a better value either, even without a liftopia discount, the family 4 pack tickets is tough to beat! I drive 447 miles to ski there, yup, 18 hours of driving for 12 hours skiing in a weekend.

Black is our favorite place to ski. This mountain is laid-back family oriented New England skiing at its finest. No crowds; although the parking lot is always full, no hot-shots, just families and people who show up to ski. The lift operators always make a point to interact with our kids each time we get on the chair, which just adds to the fun. We make the 3 hour drive several times a year to ski there.

Black Mountain in Jackson NH is my favorite place to go for laid back old New England ski terrain. There is never much of a crowd and the people that are there are very polite and family oriented. I have been going to Black for a couple of years now and like that it keeps it's classic feel. Great deal from liftopia.com.

For a small mountain, it was very enjoyable. Not much to ski down from the top, but mid mountain was good.

FALSE ADVERTISING. I brought my girlfriend who is only a beginner here last weekend and there is no slope for someone to learn. The map clearly shows a bunny slope but there was none which is blatent false advertising. One person who worked there advised me that she should climb up a little hill and ski down it. We can climb up a hill on a golfcourse for free. In addition, the slopes were very poorly maintained. We will not go back and advise others to not go and waste their money. We would ask for our money back if we thought we could get it.

Black Mountain was perfect last Saturday, January 28, 2011. We arrived at 9am and skied until 3pm. Never a line on the two chairs and the trails were great for a small mountain. Snow sculpting was a bonus. The snow sculpting was slope side so it was neat to watch progress as one reloaded on the quad. Overall, a wonderful experience: Liftopia, Black Mountain, Snow Sculpting and a Tuckermans as reward.

Black relies heavily on natural snow, and when it has it, it's fantastic. check the daily report on the Black website; as long as the trail count is 25 or more, it's well worth a visit. Best day to go is Saturday, when Wildcat, Attitash, Cranmore etc. will be crowded and skied off. It's old time New England. To those who would say there is no difficult terrain, take a stab at the Mr. Rew trail, or White Knuckle. But the real reason you visit Black is for a laid back day, low impact, low cost, no big resort stress.

We skied there on Tuesday, January 18th. I've been skiing my whole life and have never had a day like this - there were maybe 15 other people there, it snowed all day, so we were getting fresh tracks every run, and the tickets were $18. Freaking crazy! I'll be back.

Only two lifts were open with 13 trails (really it felt like two). But man... where there was snow it was great and NO LINES. We got in so many runs, it was a blast. Felt like when I was growing up.

I went on 1/2 thinking that there'd be at least a good amount of snow in Jackson NH. Boy was I wrong. The Liftopia deal was so good that I couldn't pass it up. In hindsight, I should've passed. When we got there, only a few trails were open and everywhere else was just grass. Only one chair lift was in operation. I can see the potential for being a decent old-school ski resort but make sure to check the condition and trail opening before you commit.

first time at Black last weekend- lured by an incredible Liftopia deal- unfortunately I caught it during a bad thaw but I see the potential- I think the physical plant could use some upgrading- I'd return for a good deal.

Went 12/24 No snow in greater N. Conway area, so few trails/lifts open. Those that were open were fine. Liftopia price made it an OK ski day. Would have felt overcharged at regular price.

Black mountain is an excellent ski area that is very family oriented. The trails are great. Excellent mountain for intermediate and advanced skiers, a bit tough for new beginners unless all trails are open which they usually arent at this time of year. I love the place and it is an excellent value!
