Cataloochee Reviews & Tips (15)

Cataloochee has been one of the earliest area in the country to open due to tremendous snowmaking. Skied there this past weekend over Thanksgiving. Did not seem crowded. Longest line 10 min, most < 5 min. Snow was great but softened later on. Base up to two feet! Too bad top not open but 75% open is enough to get my technique down and my legs in shape. All new rental equipment which was good to ski on. Getting rentals, lessons much better this year. Lessons start every hour. Food is pricey but is good.

Cat is outstanding in making snow and grooming. Concur, if possible ski midweek as it is cheaper and far less crowded. Been skiing there for 20 years and seen tremendous improvements over the time. If you ski weekend - get there no later than 8am and consider renting your skis at their place in the valley to save time. That way you can hit the slopes when they open at 0830. If you're competent, ski the trail edges for better snow and to reduce the likelihood of getting run over by an out of control skier - not a huge risk. IF they are making snow, pick your line and try and avoid getting in the main blast - and look away to keep your goggles from getting coated in ice. And DON'T bring your friends up to the expert slope if they can't ski. It is not long, but it is a true black diamond and they will get hurt or hurt someone else.

Have grown up riding all along the east coast for 20+ years. First season ever going to Cataloochie though. What a great place. Super friendly staff and ski patrol. One of my new favorite places to go. Gets a little too crowded on the weekends, but that's everywhere and nothing new to anyone on here. Great place, Maggie valley has some sweet little mom & pop places to stay for relatively cheap that are in decent shape. Good mountain, would rather go here than Sugar anyday. that place be cray.

Weekends get fairly crowded - especially with new skiers and snowboarders. Get there early to have room on the slopes. Rent a tall locker if you are skiing more than 1 day so you dont have to cart your skiis to the car. Lockers are $.75 to open each time so come prepared. GREAT selection at the bar!! They had to blow a lot of snow so by mid-day the snow was either icy OR in piles along the trails which caused a lot of skiers to fall. I would definitely go again - but earlier in the year AND during the week days!!

Okay ski resort but lack diversity of ski runs. A day's visit would be adequate

It was a great deal. We were there on a Monday and did the $29 for one of the kids as we used the stay overnight/kids ski free for the rest of the family. We rented in town which was great as we were the only ones there, but by the time we got to the top of the mountain at 9 am, the 9:30 lessons were booked. So every one had to go on their own until the next lesson time at 11:30. They said not all the instructors showed up that day. Can't beat the deal at Cataloochee and the kids were all skiing/boarding by the end of the day. Great slopes for beginners, but experienced skiers will probably get board after a few hours.

I took my 14 year old son snowboarding on a Monday and it was a great experience. It is hard to beat the $29 special, which includes lift ticket, rentals and lessons. Neither of us had ever snowboarded, so we took advantage of the lesson. Chuck was our instructor and he did a great job in teaching us the basics. He was very attentive the entire time and made sure we learned what we needed. I highly recommend going on a weekday and it was not crowded and we never had to wait for a lift ride. Overall experience including snow conditions was a pleasant surprise and I highly recommend it from a value perspective.

My 8yr old liked the lessons & I liked the $29 deal ;-] however-even on a Friday morning- >>>I would recommend renting in town<<< if you don't want to wait for boots & skis in the crowded rental area at Cataloochie- Not a lot of challenging slopes, but its the easiest resort to reach from Atlanta-Beech & Sugar are bigger but more $ & longer drive Otherwise all pleasant-decent après ski bar for such a small resort.

First time skiing in 20 years, and had a great lesson included in the $29 lift ticket. I got my ski-legs back after that! I agree with other reviewers about skiing during the week if possible. As a beginner, I don't think I would have had so much fun had the slopes been crowded like on weekends. I skied Tuesday-Thursday, and there was very light traffic. I would recommend taking your own snack/lunch food. The food isn't great, much like a convenience store with a hot bar, which was a shame. Overall, great staff and great conditions. I will go again!

Get there hour before it opens so you can get in on first lesson. Magic carpet great for beginners. Go during week if possible. Snow conditions were great! $29 for lift ticket, ski rental, and lesson hard to beat!

I bought the beginner weekday deal (lift, equipment, group lesson) and went on Wednesday. It was great. Well run place, not crowded, extremely helpful and friendly service in all areas. My biggest compliment goes to Grant, our instructor. He was wonderful - knowledgable, patient, encouraging - it really made the difference and far exceeded the private lesson I'd taken at another resort late last season. Go on weekday - take the lesson - have a great time!

Went to Cat on 1/12-1/13... Sunday is always crowed, so you have to be ready to wait 5-10 minutes in the lift line.. there were a lot of staff, para-medics, etc, which is great. On Monday, no lines at all, but also no paramedics... anyway, perfect day for snowboard. they should improve the restaurant and the amenities, as the prices in there are not really friendly for a small ski area. also, provide wi-fi, since there is no cell phone reception in that area

Cataloochee was a very nice family place to sk. We skied on a monday so no lift lines were a plus. My four children all took a ski lesson, all four learned to ski and enjoyed it. The problem was the snow guns. They ran them non-stop all day, it seemed dangerous. The wind was blowing the snow into a white out you could not even see. The temp. was zero, the snow guns made it so cold and the visibility so little it was hard to enjoy. The lift to the face was in the direct path of the snow gun, so each time you went up you would be right in the path. There was no skiing after 4pm that day so I'm not sure why they didn't wait to run the snow guns after closing. Not sure if I would go to this resort again.

Went onb a Wednesday,, A nice crowd but not overcrowded. For a small venue Cataloochee is well run, well maintained and professionally staffed. I would recommend it to anyone that is looking for a nice relaxing day skiing or boarding. I wish they would offer a seniors day during the week.

My brother and I went on a Monday, a non-holiday, which was great! We got on the lifts with no wait. I attended ski school with 1 other person which allotted for more one on one attention. My instructor, Nick, did a great job at teaching me the basics of snowboarding. This was my first time on a board, but by the end of the day I could make a run without falling, a testament to ski school and my instructor, Nick . I saw several people falling every five feet; after speaking with them I found out they didn't attend ski school. I recommend going on a weekday, less people equals more runs. I also recommend taking an hour out of the day to go to ski school. You'll enjoy your experience much much more.
