Elk Mountain Reviews & Tips (13)

I've been going to Elk since the 70s. Yeah, it's another 45 minutes past the Pocono areas, but it's worth it. The grooming is impeccable and there are a ton of nice challenging black diamonds (yeah, it's no place for beginners or even many intermediates). Generally, the people who come here are pretty high level boarders and skiers, so you don't need to worry about people who don't know what they are doing (they will be at Blue Mountain). There are never any lift lines worth mentioning. You might wait five minutes on a crowded weekend right after lunch. Weekdays? Ski down and hop in the chair. High speed lifts would be nice but I usually buy a half day pass and will typically get at least fifteen funs (almost three vertical miles) in an afternoon. In my book, that makes it worth the trip. You would be very lucky to get in that many runs in a full day anywhere else.

My favorite ski area within a day's drive, by far. Driving that extra hour past the Poconos is well worth the time. I only ski midweeks, and the place is deserted. I have never had to fight icy slopes, and its always plenty cold here. I also love being able to get lunch for under $10 ! Not a great place for beginners like my girlfriend, and talking to my fellow skiers on the "not so fast" lifts is nice. If you haven't discovered Elk Mountain yet - DO IT !!!

Love these reviews! Please keep going to Camelback, JF/BB if you find Elk outdated and expensive. Elk is special and there's a good reason. It's a great mountain, beautiful grooming, and the crowds all stop driving at the Poconos. Demanding faster high speed lifts and more modern conveniences will just make it more crowded and lose what makes it a great mountain & family experience. Camelback is nothing like Elk. But be my guest and keep complaining because it helps keep the crowds away!

Been skiing at Elk since early 70's. Great place to ski however, the lifts have not kept up with times while $61 lift ticket has. Way too expensive to ski that's why lift lines are short. Now I ski at Elk only once a year due to being expensive. If Elk was more affordable their business would go through the roof.

I've have been skiing here since I was four, still race for the mountain, and consider it my second home. there is no place better. The slopes are fun, the food is good, and everyone who works there is pleasant as can be. People of all ages and levels of experience will find something to do.

Elk's the best mountain south of VT (or parts of NY) in terms of terrain. All of the other posts rightfully mention the slow lifts - there had been talk for years of adding at least one high speed lift but the family-owned hill tends to like the idea of the mountain being homey and limiting the number of skiiers via the slow lifts. Midweek is literally a dream - basically have the mountain to yourself. No substitute to the pitch & bumps on Tunkhannock anywhere in PA, hands down. It's a no frills kind of place - lodge, food, lifts, parking lots, etc - but that's why so many of us love the place. Worth the extra hour through the Poconos if you're going for the skiing. Not the place if you're looking for the best overall experience (and value for the dollar).

Maybe the best mountain in PA, season pass prices are outrageous by any measure, daily tickets are pricey, always slow to get the snow making in gear, slow lifts take long enough to reach the top you can take a nap, no lights on any slope with bumps at night, the only water fountain on the main level of the lodge has been broken all 2012 season, no wifi in the lodge. Your best bet is to go up mid week mid Jan - closing for a no frills ski day during which you will spend the majority of your time on the lift.

Best hill in PA by far, however they are using the same slow lifts that were there in 1975 when I first started skiing Elk. THEY NEED HIGH SPEED DETACHABLE(S) BADLY! Come on Elk, SPEND THE MONEY! I drive close to 3 hours to ski Elk, passing the Poconos to get there. Went to Camelback for the first time in 16 years this week. Had a great time. Although Camelback is not as good of a hill, the high speeds were a definite advantage. I love Elk but it takes so long to get to the top, I can fall asleep while riding those lifts. COME ON ELK, step into the 21st century. PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE
