Magic Mountain Reviews & Tips (35)
Some of the best terrain in the northeast. The combination of some trails having groomed and natural sides is really nice. A great laid back atmosphere where you can really enjoy skiing. Its not fancy but for pure ski enthusiasts, its heaven.

If you are not a "local," ( I am not), then Magic may not be for you, unless you can be there right after a snow storm.
We were there on 3/11 for the first time ever. They advertised that all but 3 trails were open, however, conditions were only so-so and more than 3 trails were closed. Many of the expert trails were closed. It's too bad because we could see the great terrain that we've heard about, but it was mostly closed due to lack of snow coverage. They rely alot on natural snow. We live in PA and visit VT twice a year for skiing. We will go back to Magic if our visit coinsides with a 6"-plus snowfall.
We basically had the mountain to ourselves, which is always nice. The Magic employees were very friendly. The food was good. It is a nice place to visit, and definately a neat, "old-school" type ski area.

Magic was a childhood Favorite of mine!! Advanced skiing with awesome views! Magic is the kind of place you wanna go to ski at your pace with no crowds on the trails or at the lifts. Its not fancy its a simple quaint place to go. Took my kids (16yrs & 12yrs) there for the first time and they loved it...Bolton Valley and Magic Mountain are on the same track...low key laid back skiing. I love the challenging trails they offer here! SKI MAGIC!

This place is unique and different. if you like skiing without the shishi stuff you see on most other "mountains" ... this is the place. If it snows, they leave it alone in most places
. Your kids learn to ski.......not slide through groomers all day and think they can ski.....A nice mix of woods, bumps, some grooming and no crowds.....
Try it when they have a decent storm, you will return!!!!!!

Magic isn't just the mountain in southern Vermont with the most interesting terrain - its a way of life - a community and really authentic Vermont experience. Its also the only mountain where my intermediate wife and I can ski together on the same lift all day. I take the hard way down - she takes the cruiser and everything comes together. An experience worth trying

A hidden gem in Southern Vermont. My second trip there in the last three years. Some nice groomed cruisers and plenty of challenging runs. Only two lift lines with older two/three person lifts, but only rarely had to wait more than a few minutes at the worst. No problems with big clusters at lift lines or at top of trails like at some larger resorts. Definitely some challenging narrow runs! Probably best for at least an intermediate to advanced skiiers. Would definitely go again! Get to the place early to catch some nice groomed runs for a special treat if the weather allows!

Amazing conditions, especially seeing how we are into the 2nd week in March! Had a good mix of terrain, some groomed/some natural, to give any level person a great day on the slopes! Add in short lift lines, friendly people, and some great views and you can't go wrong!

Great skiing because we had lots of fresh snow. Limited grooming made many trails more challenging. Steep and radical trails compared to other mountains. Several double diamonds which are not plentiful at other mountains. Downfall: Black Magic was closed due to a race. There were many areas of rocks and twigs sticking up on some trails, but all in all, Magic is a nice small mountain that is a nice place to spend a day....cheap rates through Liftopia.

What a Great Place!! Skied the past 3 weeks there; snow was great, lift lines were short; definitely plenty of challenge for the intermediate skier. They groomed some of the green/blue trails which was fantastic!
Believe in Magic! :)

We went here the day after Nemo dumped 15 inches of snow in Southern Vermont. Super impressed by everything: atmosphere, trails, the red double chair, and the conditions were excellent to boot.
No out of towners (they were all at Stratton, and when we met up with friends who had spent the day at Stratton and swapped stories, we definitely had the better experience), and all the skiiers were super polite and considerate.
Our first choice for powder days!

Real skiing, Real people, and a Real deal! Magic is what skiing used to be before all the world went quantity crazy. We just left there this week of vacation and i can not wait to return. Any skier will love the mountain. Beiginner to huber advanced will find what they want. No doubt you owe it to yourself to step off the grid for a time and rediscover what skiing used to be before all the madness. The staff is awesome....they have it right. What an absolute special treat. Thanks for bringing back some of the soul of skiing.

This place has come a long way in the last four years. With new management and a boatload of volunteer help, it is slowly shaking off it's image of a steep, gnarly, experts-only hill. They have initiated the “co-op” ownership style, where skiers own the mountain. Well, they own half of the shares, the initial operator/owner has the rest.
There are finally two chairlifts operating as of Feb. 2013. During the Nyear's holiday, the only lift running had a brake problem and was shut for nearly a week. At that point, they decided to fix both lifts (the "black" lift had not been running (it needed some work before it would pass inspection). So now the lift reliability problem is fixed.
Snowmaking - they had nearly nothing four years ago. There was/is a rat's nest of pipes all over the hill, vestiges of prior management's past attempts. When fired up, the pipes leaked like a sieve. They spent two years welding all the joints and fixing all the leaks. I was out in January and it was amazing how well they could pump it out.
Grooming - They got a new groomer this year. It does a lot more and does it faster. BTW, having skied up and down the green spine in January, Magic was in no better or worse condition than the rest.
Slope conditions – The blues and greens are overly neglected in the PR. There was at one time a mis-placed marketing strategy to attract only the best skiers. What was neglected is an entire east side full of groomers, with priority given for snowmaking. The blacks and double blacks are truly that. They are all on the west side of the mountain, keeping slow and fast skiers naturally apart.
Terrain - East side is gentle groomers with a lot of shoulder room. Easy and more challenging blues. On the west side, there are more natural trailers, which by definition get bumped up. This is where the expert challenge it. A few “boulevard” trails, but mostly the old-style narrow (and somewhat narrow) , winding trails. Gives a sense of adventure and beautiful scenery.
Over the past four years, volunteer work groups have pruned the woods between the trails, making for easy, intermediate and advanced challenges. Some are on the map, some are not.
Customers – Very laid back, yet very motivated to ski. Not a lot of people just hanging around the lodge. What is friendly? Other skiers who say “hello”, staff who are willing to help or just chat with you. Smiles on most people. Does not have an urban mentality. As many people have said, no liftline. I did find a 20-person line on a weekend last month. But that was dissipated within one run.
Lodging – Magic isn’t a destination resort. It’s a skier/boarder’s mountain. You can create a multi-day stay nearly on-mountain with nearby hotels, which are separately owned.
Lifts – I’ve already mentioned two lifts. Magic runs even when winds are high, thanks to a fixed grip (and slower) lift. We left Mt. Snow one day after a storm and all lifts were on wind hold. Ended up at Magic and had an incredible day of powder.
Management – probably the hardest working crew I know. Worked all night to fix and test the emergency brake. The president as lift attendant and ticket seller.
Apres-ski – usually a band on the weekend.
Open Friday to Monday. Limited due to the lack of midweek customers. That would change if demand increased.
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Yes, there are a few rocks poking through the blacks and a little grass now and then. But it’s easily noticeable and easy to navigate around. Skiing the way it was in the 70’s before everyone got spoiled and demanded cushier slopes and latte’s.
As Magic slowly heals from neglect, I expect conditions to improve. You owe it to yourself to check it out just once. We can’t afford to lose another area.
I’m not a shareholder. But I know many people there because they stepped forward and said “hi!” And nobody paid me to say this!

If the deal seems too good to be true....
Bought a $46 on Liftopia. Im guessing the deal was offered because 50 percent of the mountain was closed. Which pretty much leaves you with about two, three runs. One of which had grass and small trees sticking out of the snow. Also, it appeared the lift overheated. We spent a good 20 minutes just hanging out on the lift.
There are some positives about this place: 1) the bar was fantastic. Bloody mary bar? Dont mind if I do! 2) probably a very economical way to go for beginners. 3) very friendly staff.

Mostly natural conditions. Watch the weather before you decide to go.
Magic Mountain review written Jan 13 2013 - 09:16 PM
When you decide to go to Magic Mountain, you should remember that it is a small, old fashion ski resort. The lifts are doubles and attached, so the ride up is slower than at more modern locations. There is limited snow making and they do limited grooming.
Once you remember all this, and if you can plan your visit to be soon after several inches of new snow has fallen, you will have a great time.
Takes me back to the good old days!
Magic Mountain review written Jan 13 2013 - 04:02 PM
Real skiing for real skiers! A notch above most on the level of difficulty. Minimal grooming on many trails giving it an almost backcountry feel on powder days. Lots of secret stashes. Shhhh... Do other mountains even have black diamonds? This one does. And doubles too!

Even in a down snow year, the vibe and epic terrain still reign supreme over any of the other Southern Vermont resorts.
Magic Mountain review written Mar 12 2012 - 08:25 PM
Definitely one of the best places to ski when there is a good amount of natural snow.
Fantastic, classic skiing vibe; friendly staff.
I don't go here expecting the best ski conditions per se (especially given the lack of natural snow this year), but the terrain is unparalleled.
Magic Mountain review written Mar 06 2012 - 07:37 PM
without fresh powder, this mountian is very tough. Blues seemed like Black to me. Only one lift working and VERY slow.
Magic Mountain review written Mar 05 2012 - 03:55 PM
It's the great mountain I remember coming to as a kid. It was wonderful to bring my son here and enjoy the atmosphere and runs with him. With some more runs open and some natural snow it would be fantastic. If you're there with the limited skiing and they're racing, hit the racing run after they're done - much better cover since it hasn't been skied off yet.

My friends and I seldomly venture anywhere else. Why should we,the steeps, and glades are some of the best in vermont! Couple that with affordable lift tickets, light crowds and great atmosphere and you can't go wrong!
Magic Mountain review written Jan 22 2012 - 05:59 PM
I love this mountain! I hope they save it and upgrade the lifts and the grooming...as good as any in southern Vermont. We had the place practically to ourselves....very underated mountain. True vertical is very close to Killington (which is not 3k but more like 1800 feet---despite what they claim)
Magic Mountain review written Mar 07 2011 - 02:47 PM
This mountain has the best terrain in lower VT, posibly the whole state. If there is 6 or more inches of snow, you'd be crazy to go anywhere else. If your an expert skier, do yourself a favor and check out magic, I'll be back next storm.

awesome ski area
Magic Mountain review written Feb 08 2011 - 06:34 AM
This place is really magic! The best mountain I've been to so far.
Zero crowds, and a small intimate feel to this mountain. There's a great variety of terrain here, from glades, moguls, powder runs (my favorite) to long sweeping trails to take a break on, or for beginners.
I'll be sure to come back here - the price on Liftopia for a full day is unheard of anywhere. Definitely worth the long drive up from NYC, nothing else close compares to Magic Mountain!

Magic Mountain is a great place. Few crowds, awesome trails and a sense of discovery.

One ride up the red chair lift at magic and you will understand why people love magic. Steep, double fall lines, trees, mandatory cliff drops, oh yeah and an entire chairlift full of people waiting to see you rip it!
Magic Mountain review written Jan 26 2011 - 06:29 AM
My first time at Magic on Jan 17th 2011 and I loved it. If you are looking for something a little different this is the place. I've skied all over New England and haven't encountered such terrain outside of Mad River, but novices will have as much fun as experts. It's a bit different, a bit less expensive, a bit more interesting, and seriously fun.

Roots skiing with great people. I think nothing of hopping in the car and making the trek from Essex County, MA as often as possible. Long live Magic!

No snowmaking and so no crowds. Great for skiers..

Great place, great vibe. Learning that it is a great place to raise a family of ripping skiers.
Long live Magic, VT!

Love Magic Mountain, amall but challenging, close parking and no need to take a shuttle bus, you won't spend all your time searching for your ski buddies. We stay at the Blue Gentian Lodge in easy walking distance, very cheap@
Magic Mountain review written Dec 10 2010 - 10:42 PM
I've skied everywhere in Vermont, and there's no place I'd rather be than Magic. Plenty of room for novices, some wide-open runs to bomb from top-to-bottom, and some of the most incredible steeps and narrow chutes in the state. If you like the overpriced, Disney World atmosphere of Stratton, Killington, and Okemo, stick to that. Conversely, if you enjoy the subtle pretentiousness of MRG and the animosity they create between riders and skiers, by all means, stay there. But if you want a true, laid-back Vermont experience--where skiers and riders tear it up side-by-side along with telemarkers, monoskiers, sit-skiers, skinners, and anything else you can imagine--then check out Magic!
