Enjoyed my time at Alyeska. Nice blue runs. No groomed blacks that I know of. It had snowed about 2 feet during the two days before I skied there so a combination of the new snow and perfect temperatures made for good morning and early afternoon skiing. Lighting was more difficult later in the afternoon. While there aren't necessarily a lot of groomed runs, there's a nice amount of area that is in bounds that is available. When the weather was clear it was a good view from the top looking out at the Turnagain and mountain range surrounding the ski area. Went on a Tuesday (2/28/12) and it was not packed at all. Locals are a pretty friendly lot. Only bummer was that I was stuck in Seward due to a poor choice on rental car and the amount of snow that fell the previous two days. So, if you're renting a car and buying lift tickets ahead of time, don't lose a day by going cheaper on the car rental...

So much snow. Stay away! You can't handle the endless pow, and we like ripping up the wide open trails. . .

For a midweek ticket, Liftopia is literally the BEST deal you can get on a pass. This was verified by the ticket counter, yet so few people seem to know about liftopia up here (as compared to Colorado where I used to live). For the weekend, apparently Costco and Groupon have some 2-for-$60 specials.
Blues here can be steeper, more narrow, and more challenging than any of the Summit County, CO resorts. I prefer the big bowls (black diamonds) of Summit to the bowls here because they are bigger in CO, and the black diamonds in AK are harder than those in CO. But, on a weekday you may have it practically all to yourself!
Most important thing: When we get huge dumps in Girdwood, they often have to close down the resort early/open late, or not even open at all - this mountain is steep enough that there is a lot of avalanche control that needs to get done, and even the daylodge is technically in the avi path. Also, we tend to lose power often during huge snow storms. You won't get stuck on the lift (they have emergency generators) but it could put an end to your day. If the resort doesn't open at all, they should allow you to use your liftopia pass on another day; but if it is open for just part of the day, I don't think they have to honor that (but I'm not sure).
I usually wait until the night before to see just how much of a storm we are getting, then I buy my pass if I think it won't affect opening/closing time of the resort.

Don't pre-buy too early!! It was dumping snow, two days later freezing cold and the top of the mountain was closed down. Could have bought the same ticket cheaper at the resort (but wouldn't have, who wants to do groomers in negative weather).

I found out at the ticket window that the lift ticket included the lift pass that they usually sell to you for $5.00. Love the on line option.

Actually Alyeska has a good price on lift tickets. The big mountains in CO seem to be about $20 or $30 more. Alyeska doesn't get the volume of people as the states, so it seems to me they have done a good job keeping the prices low.

If you are renting, the price is great, but the wait is terribly long. I learned to ski on this mountain years ago and moved back here after 17 years of being gone. The place has certainly grown. Many more options on ski areas than when I was young.
I can understand opening at 10:30 only because of the time of sunrise, but at the same time, can't they just turn on the lights they use for night skiing and open earlier? Would be nice.
Lastly, price is pretty high, but again, they do have the best skiing option available within an hour of Anchorage, so it's to be expected.

I agree that it is overpriced, but that is simply to do with living in Alaska and the fact there are no other comparable resorts in the state, leaving them able to choose their own prices.
The resort however is one of the finest in north america. There are so many pieces of natural, ungroomed, steep terrain that size doesn't seem to be an issue. And when outer areas are open, there is nothing that really can beat a 7-10 min run of double black diamond natural terrain, with only a 15 min tram ride. Lines are only bad on opening and holidays.

Decent resort, small compared to big resorts in CO & UT. Doesnt open unil 1030am, outer areas dont open too often, and the lift tickets are generally overpriced...our season passes are $1100+!!!! What a ripoff...theres a reason most locals do the backcountry instead.
