Mt Baldy has been around for over 50 years. Take a step back in time where things move at a gentle pace. Located just 14 miles North of the 210 Fwy. in the City of Upland, Mt Baldy is the largest, closest, and best mountain in Southern California. It has 2100 vertical feet of terrain and over 400 skiable acers.

This... year Mt Baldy has added a ski and snowboard park that will be open this year by the end of November. We have many more jumps, rails, boxes and wild features to get your mojo pumping. Mt Baldy is also proud to announce the long awaited completion of our 7 million gallon snow making reservoir. This means bigger and better snow coverage throughout the season. If you haven't been to Mt Baldy in a while, now is a great time to come check us out! Read more

Reviews & Tips (68)

The re-occuring theme, " It's not the mountain..." it's the family that thinks they own the mountain that hires punk a** kids trying to be cool, They will give you dirty looks and lame service becuase they are still trying to be cool "highschool forever dude!" The the owners, not the kids are to blame, they are the ones that cannot control their staff and are ruining what could be a great thing. Get rid of the cool guys and girls get some real people in there and you will have something great. Otherwise, this mountain is stained by poor ownership and the smell of a teen spirit staff.

Took my 8 year old intermediate skier this weekend, and the trip was a huge waste of time. I knew only one lift was open, but the conditions were completely unskiable. Taking money from people to ski that day was a total rip off, and they should've kept it closed. We had absolutely no glide and ended up pushing ourselves downhill. Went back and got my money back from the ski rental after two tries down the unskiable slope, but had still wasted the gas money and the liftopia ticket money. Do not bother going up unless there is a huge snow dump.

When this place has a good dump of snow and all lift are open it's one of the best. Great trails! 2012 has been bad. Only the beginner trail is open and tubing traffic crowd make it hectic. Let's pray for some more snow soon! Last year was awesome!

El niƱo is Baldy's best pal best terain in so cal if it is covered, that being said even if it is bring the rock board and bs ready to p-tex after the best conditions. If it dumps this is where you want to be the day after, if not don't waste the time and money.

I agree with Tsao Ling. I still wouldn't have gone if they paid me and I wish I read these reviews before, but I haven't been to any SoCal mountains yet. When we got to the "snow", my friend and I actually ended up walking up to the top of the only run to what we thought was a chairlift that would take us to more than a 2" base of slush. It sounds stupid, but from just looking at the run there is no way anyone can consider that a run. We said fuck it, packed our shit and got some good night boarding in at Summit for only 15$ more. Even if you are a beginner don't take the 20$ offer. You won't learn until there is actually some snow there.

Just simply don't waste your time and stay away. Spend the money and make the drive to go else where. I can not believe how unorganized and ancient this place is. Safety seems to be a foreign concept to them. Most of the crowd that was there was there for the tubbing area. In order to get to the tubbing area people need to walk across the one and only run that is open. When going through this area you need to dodge tons of pedestrians, including a ton of little kids. Some of these kids were throwing rocks in the snow area where you snowboard and it scratched the bottom of my board. Need less to say, I was less than happy about this. The staff was not very knowledagle and not very willing to help you at all. The locker area very small in you need a ton of quarters for the lockers. If you do decided to try it, inspite of my advice, go with very low expectations and two rolls of quaters. Also, please email me to let me know how it went, chili4@yahoo.com.

I took my girlfriend to Mt. Baldy to teach her how to snowboard...The prices were cheap so it seemed like a good place to learn...There was only one run open...whatever we propably would have been on one run anyways anywhere else...the problem was that the run is way to flat and slushy. She couldn't even go fast enough to effectivly learn. And not to mention there where so many rocks!!!!!!!...When a resort cares about my equipment and snowboarding experience, I give them my full support....Someone needs to invest a couple million in this place to jumpstart. It would be a sweet place if they came up to speed with todays snow making and chair lift technology. Save your money and the bottom of your board and don't go!!!!!!

We were not lucky to have much snow, but the place must be good with lots of snow. But the lounge is UGLY and the restrooms MESSY and DIRTY. Skiers spend lots of money there, why don't they bother to fix this place and make it more nicer?? Only reason we went there it is the closest to us, otherwise I would go to Big Bear or other place. Ugh, keep on dreaming about Mammoth...Our daughter skied for the first time, took a ski lesson and learned well, the instructors are nice and good at their job. Waiting for more snow, will go there again.

MAKE SURE TO CALL THEM! THEIR WEBSITE IS NOT ALWAYS ACCURATE! I HAVE GONE 4 TIMES AND 2 OF THE TIMES I HAD TO TURN BACK DUE TO HORRIBLE WEATHER AND INACCURATE INFORMATION ON THE WEBSITE. WHEN THEY SAY " COME ON UP" , MAKE SURE TO CALL AND ASK IF ALL THE SLOPES ARE OPEN. BESIDES THAT, ITS A REALLY PRETTY PLACE TO SKI.

Went there for the first time last week. Coming from Austria I have great expectations in skiing resorts. There were only 2 slopes that had enough snow to ride on but they were all in really good condition and maintained really well. The lifts are really old and are definitely in need of some upgrades. I think even as a kid in austria, I do not remember riding on a lift that old. Besides that Mt. Baldy is definitely worth the trip. Its only an hour from the LA metro area which is another big plus.

We thought the season was over in early March, but we got up to Baldy after a recent storm on the 15th. The mountain was covered and the snow was great! If you want enough snow to ski on, though, you need to come right after a storm - one cold enough to dump snow, not rain. We love Baldy for a quick local day. The terrain is challenging enough for a quick ski fix and the views are great. If you are a beginner, be prepared to do some blue runs for sure and take the lift back down to the parking lot. If you enjoy sipping hot cocoa by the fireplace in the lodge, be prepared for beautiful views in a lodge that hasn't been updated since - well, a super long time, but there is a fireplace and sometimes it is even on. Food is typical beach-shack, local ski lodge type - not great and really expensive. The lifts are super slow, which can sometimes lead to longer lines. If you're headed up right after a storm, bring your chains, and watch-out for sliding sports cars! All in all, even though the place is rustic, when the snow is great, it is the best local skiing around. Enjoy!

The closest mountain to Downtown Los Angeles, Mt Baldy should be reserved for the more advanced skiers and riders. The recent storms in late March delivered Baldy a decent amount of snow. The windy peak elevation sits at 8600'. Steep trails, decent terrain, technically challenging areas with trees and rocks, Beginners be warned, there aren't many enjoyable bunny slopes .. the flats are SUPER-flat, and the steeps are, well, Steep. The only con is that the lifts are antiquated, there's no terrain park, and the bar is beer and wine only. * no hard-alcohol. -- other than that, for the price and relatively close proximity, I would def give Baldy a recommendation for any rider or skier that is looking for a mountain that is more on the challenging side. - Cheers to everyone in the Southern California Ski Scene.

If you don't have skills you might end up with some hospital bills. Hands down the best terrain in So Cal. After a good Snow Storm the place is awesome otherwise save your money or you will need repairs. Not A place for Beginners the lifts are old school and you'll end up being the @!shole who stops the lift because you face planted getting off. Steeps and Tree runs galore. And never bring your nice board to Baldy. As long as you know what to expect your golden.

I thrashed my board, core shots, gouges, hurt my wrist on some hidden boulders.. Baldy is an old fashioned ski mtn.. No perks but steep terrain with boulders lurking everywhere waiting to POP you when you bail... I was able to find some nice stashes of POW...in the forests...that was great.. be prepared to shell out some dough to have your base repaired and tuned up, its a grinder...

When it snows, Baldy is the best ski hill in SoCal, hands down. Kinda like a mini Mammoth. However, if no snow, better watch out for snow monsters as they may reach up out of the snow and grab your ski/board. Otherwise, it's a great place, steeps, trees, chutes, and vert.

I was hesitant to go there at 1st, being a socal resident and usually only going to big bear or mammoth if i board in state, I figured wed give it a shot. We went during a weekday right after a holiday wkend and after a short drive to the mountain it was pretty much EMPTY! it was awesome. i got like 15 runs in on a half day, some of the mountain was closed. overall very fun. watch out for the idiots in the pro/rental shop trying to price gouge you, you may need to refer them to the price chart incase they try to score an extra few bux. RENT a board/skis 100%. i deffinately would not bring my own board to this mtn bc its ungroomed and really rough on your equipment, it has so many hazards your gonna get some dings and chunks taken out of your board for sure no matter how good you are. Might as well trash their stuff instead of yours on this unforgiving mtn. THANKS FOR THE CHEAP TIX LIFTOPIA!

We were at Baldy again on the 3rd March 2011. The 3 runs on the exposed side were really patchy and torn up, but th elee side of the mountian was great. Jus tlet the sun get on it for an hour and it was fun spring snow. Mt Baldy is one of my favourite places to ski. Visually beautiful, plenty of advanced runs, and friendly staff. You can ski in the morning then come back to the west side and blade or swim. Where else in the world can you do that?

This mountain is for serious skiers/ boarders only. For the most part it is steep with lots of trees.. hazards are not marked and you are free to ski virtually wherever you want. No jibs etc, no scenesters, no benches at the top of the lift, old school chairlifts that look like they're gonna fall apart, hazards everywhere. Definately the wild west ski resort of socal. I love it. Tickets worked great too. No problems.

I've been here twice so far. Once on a sunny day with all artificial snow and another right after a storm. The runs are awesome with the powder but you end up waiting 10-15 min (sometimes even 20+) in between runs due to the people and lifts. There are a lot of beginners here and they fall when they get off causing the workers to stop the already slow lifts to help them out. All in all, I'd say it's a great place to go if you get discount tickets here on Liftopia, skidazzle, or Mt Baldy's Chamber of Commerce has $20 tickets sometimes. Get around the slow lifts by going on a day that's not so packed. Side note: The bartender's are friendly and they hook it up.

I decided to finally give Baldy a try after living in SoCal for over six years. I've heard of its infamous "parking lot runs" and wanted to see what the hype was about. After waiting for a new storm to drop the goods, I bought my ticket on liftopia and headed up the next day. They spin their lifts before 8am, which is great for the early birds looking for untracked runs. I'm an avid backcountry snowboarder, so I was not planning on riding any groomed trails. All though the coverage that day wasn't quite enough to shred down to the parking lot, the runs I did have in south bowl were fantastic. I only got a small taste of the terrain in south bowl, but I can easily see how the parking lot runs would be incredible if the snow pack was deeper. It became tracked out and crowded by noon, so get there early after it storms! Took some video footage in and around south bowl: http://www.vimeo.com/20185711 I also highly recommend chains even if you have four wheel drive; the hairpins do get very slick.

Quiet and hidden, away from the rude skiers and boarders that you often find at the bigger SoCal resorts. The lifts are slow and outdated, but with the little snow they get, it hardly justifies any upgrades. But when there is good coverage, excellent runs! Bring chains, those hairpin turns up the mountain are tricky after a storm. (4WD/AWD highly recommended!)

Liftopia discount is the only way to go. There is such little snow right now there that it's not worth the full admission price. YES bring your print out because they do need it(took it from me). The staff from window people on up to the manager are extremely rude and unfriendly so bring your print out and buy the tickets at least a day or two in advance. As for the the mountain...3 out of the 4 runs were open(as of 2/6)...there was just enough snow for those to be open. It's slushy with a few icy patches so falling doesn't hurt as bad so I guess that's a small plus. The restaurant/bar area is decent though...food is priced lower than snow summit so that was cool. Overall go soon or wait till we hopefully get some more snow because they aren't getting anywhere near cold enough to make snow at night right now so it's just melting away.

The Discount from Liftopia was great! Took our excited 11 yr old daughter to snowboard for the first time but arrived to an extremely RUDE staff member at ticket window named AMBER! Liftopia states that there is no need to print out tickets (NOT TRUE!!! PRINT IT OUT & HAVE IT WITH U)..After a long dragged out arguement with Amber and finally asking for Mgmt, she finally gave us our already pre-paid lift tickets while rolling her eyes and scolding us that it was the very last time she would allow anyone in without the print-out!! Great discounts and great spot for beginners...Very unfriendly and RUDE STAFF!!

The confirmation email from Liftopia says that you don't have to bring a printed copy to get you tickets. That is NOT true: your photo ID and your confirmation number are not enough. Even if you have a digital copy (for instance, on your iPod) they do not accept it. The arguments given by the staff were rude and unfair. Otherwise I had a good time.

I got an idea that this is not a place for people who expects this place to serve your full resort expectations: some people would be happier with the Snow Summit. (I love the Snow Summit too) But I love it there; quiet, and the view of the shinny ocean in the late afternoon is awesome. It is more like a private mountain experience for me. I hope there will be adquate snow falls soon, and oh, the liftpia discount continues.

For the cost of $32 thanks to Liftopia, it was great. The runs though were far and few in between. They should've had some of the runs closed since it was all rocks and pinecones. We did find one run that was great except for the snow boarders that think it's ok to just sit down in the middle of the run, all over the place, and that be safe? Overall we had a great day b/c the scenery is amazing, getting there is a piece of cake from west la and it's a nice change from going to Mammoth! I would definitely check it out after a snow storm.

This odd mountain was only worth it because of the discount from Liftopia. It has been warm recently but there was barely any snow, only muddy slush and rocks. One of the runs is just a frozen river that we watched experts struggle to get down or just slide carefully down on their edge, and the runs are very short. It's not their fault that the weather hasn't been good for keeping the snow, but we were skiing on bushes, rocks, and just slush. We got there at 11 and had done the entire mountain by 2 and only found one run worth doing twice. The chairs hurt because some are missing slats on the seat portion, so it wasn't all that surprising to find bruises on the back of my legs the next day in the size and shape of the bar behind your knees, which 2 days later is still sore. Nothing about this experience was that great, the runs were not good enough at all to redeem other poor conditions. It does seem like it would be much better if there as enough cover to use the bottom half of the mountain, but it also doesn't seem like that could hardly ever be possible. Overall, it was a strange experience that I don't ever plan on making the mistake to repeat.

Good with the discount. Has enough to keep you interested. I hope they are able to invest in their infrastructure some day--the chairs and lodge have been the same forever. Beware of the line to take the chair down to the parking lot at the end of the day if there's not enough snow to ski/board down it. The employees are all really cool and nice.

When they have enough snow, Baldy is amazing! If you are looking for a fancy resort with high-speed lifts, go elsewhere. If you want sick steeps and world class, off-piste terrain, this is the place! Some of the most incredible expert runs I've ever skied are on the lower part of the mountain (down to the parking lot) - but there is rarely enough coverage to hit those. Go midweek and have the whole mountain to yourself. The road up (and down) can be treacherous in the snow - be careful and carry chains.

This was a good place for me to practice snowboarding, I'm still a beginner. Chair 3 was closed due to wind, but the intermediate runs on the other side were cool. There was harldy anyone there friday, I did 12 runs from 11pm to 4pm when it closes. Just be prepared for riding the main lift 15 min up to the top and then having to get on another lift to actually start a run. I made lunch and ended up buying some food at the lodge because I didn't want to ride all the way back down to my car.

This is the most run down, dirty, nasty place I have ever skied. After a nice short drive from Orange County on a beautiful day we were met by sheer disappointment. We were parked on the only piece of frozen ice left in the parking lot. The porta potty's in the parking lot were full to the top, litteraly. You get your discounted lift ticket from a nice person (now I know why they are discounted). Go to use the perminent restrooms and the lady is hosing them out with a garden hose!? Does that pass a health inspection??? And then you climb up a little hill to the lift to take you up to the ski mountain, and the chairs look like they are from the 1960's and most likely have not been repaired since then. So after a rather hair raising ride to the top you unload in a rather nice mountain setting. But then you have to take a ride on another vintage lift to some nice blue runs and as you unload at the top your knees hit your chin because there is such a mound of snow that no one bothered to shovel down! The snow coverage was on the lite side, no ones fault for that and the runs were fun. But then its time to go to the lodge/resturant, seems nice, foods probably pretty good but we have a bathroom issue AGAIN! No toilet paper in any stall, not so nice after skiing for a few hours. Ski a little more on the other side, fine and then take the vintage lift down the hill and head home. Someone needs to put a little effort into this place.

For those of you who know June Mountain, Baldy is set up very similar-ride lift to lodge at base of two ski chairs. Multiple intermediate runs off east chair; lots of variety and length off west chair. On south side of San Garbiels, so gets a lot of snow. Good place to go right after snow and for a few days, but expect conditions to deterriorate after a few days of sun. Liftopia discount was very good. All skiers and staff very friendly and laid back-low key resort. Not the rush or crush of some other LA ski resorts.

Go if Snow. Sketchy road, sketchy rocks, sketchy lifts. Amazing terrain if the snow is right, expect to wait for tickets and possible lift breakage. Like Raymond said, expect some core shots and massive board/ ski damage if less than 2 feet of fresh. You can get the best runs of your life or/ and kill yourself or your friends all at the same time. STEEP AND DEEP or CUT and GOUGE!!!

Don't ride down to the parking lot unless your snowboard is disposable.

Fresh powder, awesome variety of runs for all expertise. Really nice quaint lodge to warm up and have a drink. Make sure you have chains on your tires for small 2wd vehicles. Great trails through the woods, just a beautiful small place that's close to LA.

When there is powder this is the place to go!! I was there yesterday and it was awesome! FRESH POWDER in the morning and MORE FRESH POWDER in the afternoon when they opened lift 4! ABSOLUTELY AMAZING!!!!! Pros: wide runs, lots of trees! cheaper lift deals, cheaper food, closer to LA and pretty easy to get to! Oh, and the staff was very nice! Cons: VERY old and slow lifts with seats that need replacing, needs more lifts or a snowcat to access more terrain, needs less rocks!!!! BEWARE if you have a new board!!!

Purchased two day passes on line for Jan 1, 2010 day of skiing. Road delays were minimal and on the slopes in 20 minutes with no lines. Road conditions had recent repairs and return trip took over one hour down the canyon due to traffic. Snow conditions great and one of best ski days in years. Great conditions following a storm and short drive from LA and Orange County.

After a 1 hour, 44 mile drive from Orange County, we arrived to the parking area at 7:30am on 12/28. The weather was absolutely sunny and gorgeous. We were on the slopes before 8:30am and pretty much had the east side of the mountain to ourselves with only a few other groups schussing and riding down the runs. The resort finally opened the west side lift, Chair 4, in the afternoon. So the lifts and runs were not crowded at all because they had closed the road up to the resort to do road repairs. The website said that if you weren't at the resort before 9am, you would be turned back unless you had a printed copy of your ticket reservation. This was our first time at Mt. Baldy. For the price with the liftopia discount, it was well worth the short easy drive and no lines. We only had to wait a couple of times at Lift 3. We will definitely go back, but we are concerned that if they oversell and the parking if full, then it will be way too crowded. Food prices were much lower than most ski resorts!

Pro: Excellent snow, wide variety of runs (moguls, trees, bowls, canyons), and friendly staff. Cons: We arriaved at 7:45 a.m. and didn't ski until noon. Like the website said, we called the night before and checked the website in the morning and its said the road was open. The Fire Department also said the road to the resort was open (12/27) on the AM Radio - However, the County had it blocked and said it was closed until January. After an hour and a half waiting, the County opened it to skiiers/snowboarders and residents only. Apparently, the same thing had happened the day before. Then there was more than an hour waiting in line to pick up pre-purchased tickets. (Only THREE windows for lift tickets). I'm torn - the skiing was great but getting there makes it barely worth it. My tip would be for the RESORT to communicate with the County/Fire Department on road conditions and to add more ticket windows.

One of the best places in SoCal after a snowstorm. They rely on all natural snow so if there hasn't been a storm in a while it's not worth it. Pros - Open runs, not crowded, long trails
