Thunder Ridge was a complete disaster, i went there for the first time with my friends and we are all advanced skiers who are used to Vermont mountains. So we get to the front desk and ask kindly for lift tickets and ask about the mountain (as i like to call it the bump). So the nasty lady at the front desk starts scamming us as if we stole something because we were previously looking at the pamphlets. Then we finally got to the lift, (note we didn't have to rent skis) and then the stupid line was a half hour long, finally we get to the "summit" and the run down is about 5 seconds long . Right after that we left and were bound to never come back again. My tip: don't go to thunder ridge!

There were only about 3 slopes open, despite advertisements for nearly 30 slopes, which was extremely disappointing. And despite advertisements for creating snow, the slope were mostly icy or had patches of dirt showing through. Also, only one ski lift was open, despite advertising for 3 lifts. It seems like a good place for beginners when it's more in the middle of the season (I went about a month before they closed for the season), and it's pretty close to long island and manhattan. the ski patrol is also extremely sweet and really helpful. But I would recommend going somewhere further if you're not a beginner, or if it's the beginning/end of the season.

Definitely consider going farther North, if possible. This place gets really crowded with lots of rude people from down county. They are very understaff and it is pretty much a free-for-all. The place is worn out and dirty. Prices are high for only being partially open with huge lines during peak times.

They really don't cater to the skiers needs. All they are concerned with is the skier spending money.

A small mountain, perfect for beginners & intermediates. Close by & great prices for a few hours after school. Definitely try going during the weekday where there are no lines at all. All my kids learned to ski there & the ski patrol was helpful, patient, friendly & skilled.
They have snow making, but I'm hoping w/ better snowfall all runs will be open this year. See you on the lifts!

I was prepared for the smaller mountain as I was skiing with my three oldest children, but I wasn't prepared for the completely RUDE staff as well as the fact that most of the mountain was closed. The staff was horrid and the manager refused to come out to speak to us concerning these tickets. I will NOT return to this mountain and I would NOT recommend it under any circumstances.

We went to Thunder Ridge on the weekday, so there was no crowd and no lines on the lift. It is a small mountain and perfect for a beginners. My beginner son and wife had a good time. Staff was very friendly. Yes it needs some updating but place is very close to NYC and LI with affordable lift prices. Btw, ski school instructors were also very good.

Good luck...this place is a complete JOKE. Try parking your car without getting blocked in to your spot. The manager is so rude to deal with that she does even know what nice is. It takes forever on the lift lines with all of the cutting in line that goes on.
Thunder Ridge review written Jan 28 2011 - 10:52 AM
For such a small place the lift lines are EXTREMELY long because the ski patrol, ski school and racing teams all cut the lines. The time I spent on lift lines is probably more that I would have spent driving to a larger area - 10 - 15 minutes on line for a 1 - 2 minute run is not worth it. There seem to be more ski patrol than paying customers.
Don't go into the lower level of the lodge, overwhelming bathroom odor carries throughout - quite disgusting. Sewer odor outside the lodge is also rather strong and unpleasant.
Only two lifts running for most of the day on a Saturday!

Forgot to mention the staff as a whole is miserable. One woman (Mary) called my friend at 10:30pm (!) and left a message accusing her of stealing the rental skis. When my friend spoke with her to tell her she has the receipt they were returned, she was extremely rude and didn't apologize for calling so late and for leaving a nasty vmail.

Major family mountain. Fine for someone who is just starting out and/or a family. Not fine for a group of 21+ year olds (with no kids) who are experienced. Perfect though for a quick ski after work.

Thunder Ridge is a great mountain for beginners. Its small, well priced and very friendly. They didn't have many runs open but hopefully some cold weather will change that. I'm sure I'll be back there again.
